The defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs will honour the life of Norma Hunt this season with a commemorative NKH memorial patch on their uniform during the 2023 NFL season.
The patch, to be worn on the upper right side of the jersey, features Hunt’s initials NKH in red with gold trim placed within a white and red football. The patch will be worn on the opposite side of the permanent patch honouring her husband, Chiefs founder Lamar Hunt, which the Chiefs have worn since 2007.
Norma Knobel Hunt assumed ownership of the Chiefs along with her children upon the death of Lamar in December 2006. Hunt had attended every Super Bowl from the first game in 1967 right up until Super Bowl LVII in February; she had been the only woman to be in attendance at every Super Bowl.
Along with the patch, the Chiefs also announced the creation of the Norma Hunt Super Bowl Champion of Education program, which will honour one female educator each year at the Super Bowl, starting with this season’s Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas.
“My family and I are so proud to honour our mother’s life and legacy this season,” Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said in the press release. “My mom loved football, and she loved the Chiefs. She also believed in the power of sports to unite communities and the impact sports can have on young people. While it will be difficult to begin football season without her, we look forward to continuing her legacy of attending every Super Bowl with the creation of the Norma Hunt Super Bowl Champion of Education program.”
The Norma Hunt patch will be first worn for the Kansas City Chiefs’ opening game tonight against the Detroit Lions and will continue to be worn for all games — home and away — until the conclusion of their 2023 season.
