Doechii’s Love Letter to the LGBTQ Community

This Pride Month, Billboard asked artists to write a series of love letters to their LGBTQ fans, highlighting what the community means to them as people and as artists. Below, Doechii pays tribute to the people who helped her “defy societal norms and embrace my true self.”
Growing up as part of the LGBTQ+ community in the South, acceptance wasn’t always readily available to me. As a bisexual woman living in Tampa, Florida during the early 2000s, I stood out from the perceived norm. I felt marginalized by my Southern community until I found my sanctuary online. The LGBTQ+ community provided me with the support and encouragement to defy societal norms and embrace my true self unapologetically.

When “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake” was released, I heard and saw my community want more. It encapsulated my journey as a Black woman navigating self-discovery, exploring aspects of identity, sexuality, and public perception.
I owe a tremendous amount of gratitude to the LGBTQ+ community for embracing me so tightly and pushing not only my music, but also championing my personal growth. My creative work is heavily influenced by both my Florida roots and the vibrant LGBTQ+ community. Whether I’m working on choreography or undergoing a glamorous transformation, I draw inspiration from my memories of resilience and artistry of drag queens in Ybor City and the energy of ballroom culture in NYC. Though moments of self-doubt may arise, the unwavering support and enthusiasm of my fans serve as a constant reminder of my purpose and the impact of my art. My music is dedicated to all those who have encouraged me to strive for excellence and even to those who may have doubted me along the way.
Thank you for being there for my uphill battle — this is only the start of a lifetime journey and story.
