Donald Trump Pressures FIFA & Stains The United States Team’s Appearance

Donald Trump’s call to FIFA President Gianni Infantino gets Folarin Balogun’s red card suspension overturned before the Belgium match.

Folarin Balogun just became the face of something way bigger than soccer.

Donald Trump picked up the phone and called FIFA to get a red card overturned before a World Cup knockout match, it wasn’t just about one player anymore

It was about whether the most powerful office in the world could bend the rules of the game that’s supposed to unite nations, not divide them based on who’s got political juice.

The situation unfolded after Balogun stepped on Bosnia-Herzegovina midfielder Tarik Muharemovic’s ankle during the USA’s 2-0 group stage win.

VAR reviewed it; the ref threw down the red, which meant an automatic one-game suspension. Standard procedure.

Except Trump decided standard procedure wasn’t good enough when his country’s leading scorer at the tournament faced sitting out the Belgium matchup.

He called FIFA President Gianni Infantino directly, and FIFA responded by suspending the suspension using Article 27 of its disciplinary code.

That’s the first time since 1962 that a red card at the World Cup didn’t result in a ban.

The backlash was immediate and brutal. Belgium’s federation called it astonishing. UEFA released a statement saying the decision crossed a red line and was incomprehensible.

Former FIFA chief Sepp Blatter posted on X: “Red cards are not overturned by political phone calls. They are overturned by rules, evidence and independent bodies.”

Multiple coaches questioned what happens next. If this gets overturned, what else can be challenged?

The real issue here goes deeper than a single player or a single match.

The USA has historically struggled in World Cup knockout rounds, winning just once in eight tries. Hosting the tournament at home was supposed to change that narrative.

Instead, Trump’s intervention created a different kind of stain on the team’s appearance. It sent the message that when you’ve got power, the rules bend for you.

That’s not how competition works. That’s not how respect is earned.

Belgium’s federation is investigating all potential options to challenge the ruling, and the precedent set here will haunt FIFA for years to come.
