And in a couple of posts on social media Sunday (March 2), the Canadian pop star reacted to the news with sheer disbelief. On Instagram, she shared a screenshot of a Billboard news post about the feat and expressed her shock with a slew of question marks: “?????????”
“Are you kidding meeeeeeee,” McRae added. “Thank you Thank you Thank you.”
In the comments, some of the star’s famous friends offered up congratulations. “Go baby go baby,” wrote Reneé Rapp, while Ryan Tedder gushed, “SO DESERVED! Hardest working woman in music!”
Over on TikTok, the “Exes” artist posted a silly close-up photo of herself on the set of her “Revolving Door” music video and wrote, “My album is number 1 on billboard.”
“What the heck guys,” she added in her caption, along with a sobbing emoji.
So Close to What opened with 177,000 equivalent album units in the United States. The LP was led by singles “It’s OK I’m OK” and “Sports Car.” It also features collaborations with Flo Milli, who guests on “bloodonmyhands,” and McRae’s boyfriend, The Kid Laroi, who assists “I Know Love.”
Before she nabbed her first No. 1 album, the highest McRae had reached on the U.S. albums was No. 4 with 2023’s Think Later.
About a week after So Close to What, the singer-dancer performed “Sports Car” and another album cut, “Dear God,” on Saturday Night Live. The showcase on the Shane Gillis-hosted episode marked McRae’s second time on the program.
