Thomas Rhett‘s surprise appearance at Contemporary Christian Music artist Forrest Frank’s recent sold-out Bridgestone Arena show in Nashville on Sunday night (April 13) didn’t quite go as planned. The eight-time ACM award winner surprised fans by joining Frank for a performance of their recent collaboration “Nothing Else” — and ended up leaving the arena in a wheelchair.

Thomas Rhett shared a video on Instagram Monday that showed how the injury happened.
As Frank performed the song, he paused and asked the crowd, “I can’t sing Thomas Rhett’s verse, can I?” As the crowd cheered, a spotlight shone on Rhett sitting in the audience. As he bounded down the steps toward the stage, he fell to the floor as security guards reached out to assist him in getting back to his feet.
From there, fighting through pain, Rhett quickly made it to the stage and joined Frank in an energetic performance, powering through so well that most fans didn’t seem to notice the injury, as he was jumping around the stage while leaning mostly on his right foot.
The video then shows Rhett in a wheelchair backstage after the performance. He said, “You know, sometimes you just have to sing at a Forrest Frank concert and break your ankle in the process. That gave my all for Tennessee,” he said, as the camera zoomed in on his wrapped foot.
The video then shows Rhett’s wife, Lauren, pushing him in the wheelchair backstage, as the couple laughs at the incident.
Frank commented on the video, writing, “ABSOLUTE CHAMPION.”
The collaboration reached No. 4 on Billboard‘s Hot Christian Songs chart and No. 3 on the Christian Streaming Songs chart.
