Lil E’s death marks the second shooting death of a prominent Indianapolis rapper in just weeks, as violence grips the city’s music scene.
Lil E was found bleeding out on a quiet Indianapolis street at 2:25 A.M. on June 19, and by the time paramedics got him to Eskenazi Hospital, the 35-year-old rapper was already gone.
The east side shooting on South Franklin Road near Interstate 465 marked the second time in two months that the artist known as Eric Butler had taken bullets, but this time he didn’t survive.
According to the Indianapolis Star, investigators are still searching for answers about who pulled the trigger and why.
Lil E’s history makes the violence even more complicated. He’d been connected to the Grundy crew, a group that authorities had accused of running a violent drug trafficking operation in the city years ago.
In April, he was shot at an auto repair shop less than a mile from where he’d eventually die.
So far, that case remains unsolved, just like this one. The fact that he survived that first shooting only to be killed two months later suggests either unfinished business or a city where rappers can’t catch a break.
What makes this death even more devastating is the pattern it represents.
Just weeks earlier, Playbwoi The Great was murdered on May 5 at his apartment on the east side.
The producer and rapper, whose real name was Cornell Davis, had been signed to Boosie Badazz’s label and was building serious momentum in the industry.
His mother, Jeanetta Leshore, told reporters that her son had worked with Rick Ross, Young Jeezy, and Kevin Gates.
He left behind two children, including a 17-year-old son who also raps.
The Indianapolis music community is reeling from back-to-back losses that feel less like a coincidence and more like a crisis.
