Lifers Group returns with “Prison Life,” a raw new single offering a firsthand look at the realities of incarceration and the true cost of crime.
Lifers Group has released “Prison Life,” a new single that doubles as the latest chapter in a mission the collective has carried since the moment they first formed inside Rahway State Prison in New Jersey. The track is a direct, unflinching warning to young people considering a life of crime, delivered over a heavy uptempo beat produced by Pushbuttinz, and with the full weight of lived experience behind every bar. Every member of Lifers Group has been where the song describes, and that reality comes through from start to finish.
The group made their return last year with “State N#mber,” their first release in over three decades, continuing the mission that has defined them since their inception: exposing the harsh realities of prison life through raw and honest lyricism. “Prison Life” arrives exactly one year later, and where “State N#mber” reintroduced Lifers Group to the world after a long silence, this one makes clear why their voice still matters. The lyrics are direct and unfiltered, painting vivid images of confinement, lost time, and institutional neglect, exploring the dehumanization of incarcerated individuals with a gravity and specificity that can only come from people who have lived it.
The accompanying video captures a bleak vision of Rahway Prison. Barbed wire fences, flickering lights, and slow-motion scenes of daily prison life create an atmosphere of tension, introspection, and suppressed emotion that brings the track to life in ways the audio alone cannot. What sets Lifers Group apart from virtually everything else in hip-hop is that none of this is imagined. These artists are not constructing a persona around prison; they are documenting a reality they have inhabited. That lived experience gives their music a purpose and weight rarely found anywhere in the genre, mainstream or otherwise.
The release arrives at a moment when conversations around mass incarceration, sentencing reform, and prison conditions have never been more urgent. Lifers Group has always offered something the broader discourse rarely gets: a firsthand perspective delivered without filter or agenda beyond the truth. Their work has always functioned as a cultural document and a call to action at the same time, and “Prison Life” is no different. It is not just a song. It is a protest, a memoir, and a form of resistance.
Lifers Group formed through auditions inside Rahway State Prison, later known as East Jersey State Prison, and built a catalog that extended well beyond music, with ties to the Academy Award-winning documentary Scared Straight! and the Peabody Award-winning special “I Am My Brother’s Keeper.” Their long-form video earned a Grammy nomination in 1992. Recognized widely as the pioneers of prison rap, the group spent more than thirty years in silence before returning last year with new material aimed at the same goal that has guided them since the beginning.
