India.Arie laughs off the Spend Dat backlash while Uncle Luke accuses her of Black on Black crime over her critique.
India.Arie isn’t budging an inch after days of backlash over her criticism of Yung Miami’s smash hit “Spend Dat.”
The Grammy winner returned to Instagram Saturday to remind everybody exactly what she said and nothing more.
“JUST SO Y’ALL KNOW: this is literally all I said, lol YEAH. THATS ALL! Social Media is absurd,” she wrote in the caption.
She even admitted that she’s enjoying the chaos her comments created across every timeline.
“Apparently, there was a nerve to be hit, and I get the honor of being the lightning rod … AGAIN,” the singer continued.
The controversy began June 30 when Arie replied to a Threads post calling for a boycott of the record.
“I spent my entire adult life caring way too much,” she wrote while cosigning the poster’s concerns about the song’s celebration of scammers and boosters.
Arie later claimed the “mass acceptance” of the track proved that “not everybody wants to get free.”
However, she stressed in a Substack video that she never asked anyone to boycott anything.
“I did not call for a boycott; I commented on someone’s thread calling for a boycott,” she said.
None of the noise has hurt the song’s momentum in the slightest.
“Spend Dat” sits at No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week, the highest solo mark of her career, Billboard reports.
Uncle Luke entered the conversation this weekend and framed Arie’s critique as friendly fire against her own community.
“It’s always Black on Black crime. You never hear them talking about each other,” the 2 Live Crew legend said during an Instagram Live session.
Luke argued the lyrics are simply art before taking aim at the entire conscious music lane.
“If anybody lived in the world of Jill Scott, and all music was Jill Scott, and India Arie, and all Afrocentric, we would be bored as f**k,” he said.
His comments follow fellow Miami veteran Trick Daddy, who already blasted the singers while defending Caresha earlier this week.
