Judy Sanchez: What are we gonna order? What’s the vibe?

Clave Especial: Chicken, good evening. Favorite tacos, good evening. 

Judy Sanchez: Hello.

Clave Especial: For me, a quesabirria and two asada tacos, please. That’s all. 

Judy Sanchez: Thank you very much.

Judy Sanchez: All right. First question for you, Alex. You grew up in Salinas as the son of Mexican farmworkers. How did that environment influence your identity and your music?

Alejandro Ahumada: I watched my parents who came to another country, came here struggling for the family. Eventually they made their food-truck business. Growing up was watching my mom work, making tacos, stocking the truck, going to sell in the fields. It was a very beautiful childhood, watching my hardworking parents who always gave everything for you, and you’re always aware of that and all the opportunities they gave us we always took advantage of, right?

So obviously we took the music route and we took another path from what they did, but always kind of with the foundation that hard work leads you to success. The effort. And humility, right? Humility more than anything.

Judy Sanchez: And what do they say about your success?

Alejandro Ahumada: They’re happy. Recently we went to Salinas, we had a show. People running, I mean, there was VIP and they didn’t respect the VIP. People jumped over like zombies, they were going around getting in front because they want to be there with Clave, because they know that we are for the community, that we’re there for them. My parents looking at that, happy as can be and proud.
