Nolan Wells Remembered: Spike Lee & Tyler Perry Show Up For Funeral Service

Nolan Wells’ family pushes for real answers at his memorial service with help from Rev. Al Sharpton and attorney Benjamin Crump.
Nolan Wells and his family got the kind of send-off that shows what happens when a community refuses to let a story disappear.
Hundreds gathered at Centerpoint Church in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, on Monday to honor the 18-year-old whose death on Horn Island has left more questions than answers, and the service became less about goodbye and more about demanding the truth.
Christine Wells, Nolan’s mother, stood before the crowd and painted a picture of who her son really was.
“First, I want to give all thanks and honor and glory to God for choosing Elmore and me to be Nolan’s parents. We thank you Lord for the beautiful 18 years that you blessed us with with him. Thank you for the joy he brought not only to our family but also to his friends and everyone in the community whose lives he touched. Nolan had such a gentle, calming spirit about him. He had a way of making people feel seen, welcome, and valued. He could lift your confidence with just a few words and make you feel like you belonged.”

The weight of her words hit different when you understand what comes next. She continued, her voice breaking as she described the void.
“We will miss everything about him. From his quiet nature to the corny jokes, his gentle smile, the way he made everyone around him feel comfortable, loved, and at ease. Your absence has left an emptiness that can never truly be filled. A piece of our hearts will always be missing. Nolan, your father and I are incredibly proud of you. We’ve always been proud of you, of the young man you were, and we will always be proud of the legacy of love, kindness, and faith that you have left behind.”
That’s the kind of love that doesn’t fade.
Elmore Wonsley, Nolan’s father, talked about his son’s athletic excellence and the values he passed down. Nolan earned the nickname “Mr. Cool Hands” for his consistent performance in football, basketball, and baseball, and he carried those lessons of character, self-respect, self-discipline, and perseverance into everything he did.
He was a role model for his younger siblings, the kind of big brother who showed up.
Rev. Al Sharpton delivered a eulogy that connected Nolan’s death to something bigger.
“The story of what we have faced in America is a question that started in the first book of the Bible with the first siblings. Am I my brother’s keeper? Or will we out of some emotions, some anger, some jealousy, some envy, maybe some bigotry, decide rather than deal with building up the beauty that God put in us that we will harm our brother and that we will harm our sister and through some malice try to hide it. But the Bible says that the victim’s blood cried from the ground. I hear this morning Nolan’s blood crying from the ground.”
Sharpton announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction, and he called out the unanswered questions: how Nolan’s phone and keys ended up at friends’ homes two days after he went missing, and why messages were erased from his phone.
Attorney Benjamin Crump stood alongside Sharpton demanding accountability.
“I stand before you with a plea for justice. I am so grateful that Reverend Al Sharpton, America’s civil rights leader, did not think it robbery to stand with Christine and Elmo and all of their family to let them know that despite what some people may say or do that is so insensitive, so disrespectful, so inhumane while you all are grieving the worst loss that any parent could have that people from New York, people from Los Angeles, people from Chicago, Detroit, London, Paris, all over the world has been calling Nolan Wales name. Justice for Nolan Wales.” Crump urged anyone on Horn Island that day to come forward with photos, videos, or information.
The service drew filmmaker Spike Lee and other national figures who came to stand with the family. Tyler Perry covered the funeral expenses, and Colin Kaepernick contributed to the reward fund.
According to reports, GPS data shows the boat left Horn Island at 4:31 P.M. on July 4 without Nolan Wells and never returned that night, while a distress call captured the vessel’s bilge pump failing as it took on water.
The case is now headed to the District Attorney and grand jury, with the state autopsy results still pending and toxicology reports outstanding.
