Olivia Rodrigo Says Anti-Abortionists Are Actually Just ‘Pro-Control’ in Reproductive Rights Discussion

It’s a brutal time for those in the American population who need reproductive healthcare, but Olivia Rodrigo is continuing to raise awareness for the cause by sitting down with the Center for Reproductive Rights for a discussion about some of the most pressing issues that are currently affecting countless people on the home front.

In videos shared Tuesday (July 21) on Instagram, Rodrigo talks with three different legal experts and leaders associated with the center, which takes the fight for reproductive equity to courtrooms all over the world, representing individuals in need as well as challenging oppressive laws. In one clip, she learns about the ongoing attack on access to mifepristone — threatening women’s ability to seek medical abortions in the early stages of pregnancy using the FDA-approved drug — and in another, she questions why so many southern states continue to enforce heavy restrictions on midwifery.
“I don’t even understand the mindset behind not being for midwifery,” she says after senior counsel Hillary Schneller fills her in about the disproportionate — and largely preventable — rates at which Black women, unable to turn to midwives to ensure a safe delivery, die in childbirth. “Is it just wanting to control women and bring them down? It just doesn’t make any sense.”
The Grammy winner has long been using her platform for reproductive rights advocacy. Earlier this summer, she announced her inaugural self-curated Daisy Chain Fields festival, which will see superstars such as Stevie Nicks, Chappell Roan and Doechii performing to raise money for charities championing women and girls. In April 2025, Rodrigo was honored by Planned Parenthood for taking action with her Fund 4 Good, which raised $2 million for abortion funds over the course of her Guts World Tour.
That same night, Planned Parenthood also honored Amanda Zurawski, who sued her home state of Texas in 2023 after she was denied an abortion to terminate an unviable pregnancy, causing her to nearly die of sepsis. She also suffered permanent damage to her reproductive organs.
Zurawski’s case came up in another one of Rodrigo’s discussion videos with the Center for Reproductive Rights, in which she asserts: “Not very pro-life to harm these women’s health for the long term. And to see them in the ICU is so terrifying. It’s pro-control.”
The singer’s stop by the center comes amid a busy time for her. After debuting atop the Billboard 200 with new album you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love — which spawned No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 hit “Drop Dead” — Rodrigo is now gearing up to go on a nearly eight-month tour starting in September.
