Tory Lanez Divorce Case Ends Without Dissolving Marriage

Tory Lanez remains legally married after a judge dismisses his stalled divorce case while his prison battles continue.

Tory Lanez is still a married man after Raina Chassagne’s neglected divorce petition was thrown out by a Los Angeles court.

The court blamed inactivity, not reconciliation, because Chassagne had not advanced the proceeding enough for a judge to resolve it.

They welcomed Kai’lon in April 2017; Chassagne sought sole custody, permitted prison visits and later brought him to see Lanez.

Chassagne earlier asked the sentencing judge to be “as lenient as possible for the rock of our family, for our son.”

Billboard News summarized the original filing and its custody request in a contemporaneous report released that month.

“After less than a year of marriage, Tory Lanez’s wife has filed for divorce and is seeking legal and physical custody of their child. Their separation is listed as June 1st, and she cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for filing.”

Lanez, whose legal name is Daystar Peterson, received 305 days of credit when Judge David Herriford imposed the decade-long term in August 2023.

A jury convicted him of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, carrying a loaded unregistered gun in a vehicle and grossly negligent firearm discharge.

“I believe not only that I was wrongfully convicted, but the amount of new evidence that has emerged since that trial, I think, has been overwhelming,” Lanez said.

“I’m just asking for somebody in the system to look at my case and look at the evidence and ask if this was fair.”

His full term runs into 2033, although reported parole eligibility in September 2029 means his earliest possible freedom remains roughly three years away.

His family news arrives as AllHipHop’s exclusive reporting revealed California’s dismissal bid against his $100 million federal lawsuit over a May 2025 prison stabbing.

His complaint says inmate Santino Casio stabbed him 16 times, collapsing both lungs, while officials ignored known risks and later withheld valuable songbooks.

“Truthfully, I’ve done my best to keep my head above water, but mentally, I’ve gone through trauma that I sometimes even struggle with,” Lanez said.

California argues sovereign immunity blocks claims against its corrections department and insists federal civil-rights law does not make the agency a liable person.

A federal judge is scheduled to hear California’s dismissal request August 26, giving Lanez’s prison fight its next official test.
