TMZ caught up with Fat Joe to get his thoughts on veteran rappers and producers linking up to drop albums. Common and Pete Rock‘s long-awaited collaboration dropped Friday (July 12), and Nas and DJ Premier have plans on releasing a project, as well. Answering a question about who might have the better album, the Bronx rapper said he has high hopes for the albums while also revealing his plans for the summer.
“I think they’re both gonna be classics,” he said. “And breaking news — Fat Joe will be dropping an album in August, too, so put me in that list of pioneers, legends and icons.”
He’s already begun heating things up. Joey Crack and Remy Ma released the single “Outta Control” Friday (July 12), and the chorus interpolates DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince‘s classic “Summertime.” This song is due to ring off in the Uptown NYC hookah lounges.
There’s no release date or title yet for the new set, so we’ll keep you posted. This will be Fat Joe’s first solo album in 14 years since releasing The Darkside Vol. 1 in 2010. He has released three collaborative albums during that span, though: 2017’s Plata O Plomo with Remy, 2019’s Family Ties with Dre from Cool & Dre, and What Would Big Do 2021 with DJ Drama.
Joe, Nas and Common aren’t the only rap legends dropping albums this year. LL Cool J‘s The FORCE is due in September, and Rakim is dropping his self-produced album G.O.D.’s Network (Reb7rth) in a couple weeks.
Crack also has an interview show with Starz on the way entitled Fat Joe Talks where the rapper will “give viewers unique access into the lives of today’s most influential personalities who drive the cultural zeitgeist,” according to Deadline.
