Celebrity HipHop’s Next Up: Exclusive Interview with J Menace

Published
5 months agoon
Today, we linked up with the upcoming artist J Menace for an exclusive interview.
How does your music reflect your personal experiences and emotions?
I only speak to what I’ve been through and/or going through. So all my music is just different shades and experiences of my personal life.
What do you believe is the role of music in society?
I think the definition has gotten a bit lost in Hip Hop…..but the role in my opinion is to express your own artistic view in this thing we call life.
How do you navigate the balance between artistic expression and commercial appeal?
That’s a hard one. I personally make sure I stay with whats in tune at the moment. Everything from beat selection to cadence. But my subject matter is always personal to me. So I’m always current but authentic.
What is the most profound message you want to convey through your music?
Rap ain’t dead. Art ain’t dead. Authenticity is real. You can be you still be dope.
Have there been times when your music helped you process difficult life events?
Absolutely! Songs like “Until We Meet Again” on my upcoming project “Still Dreaming” is a perfect example. It’s a letter to the people closest to me that have passed. I felt like that helped/helps me through my grieving process.
How do you define success as a musician beyond fame or popularity?
Good question! By what you were looking to achieve outside of those things. Do people appreciate your work? Do you make money? Are you satisfied with your work? Do you work on your craft? To name a few things.
What is your creative process like when you encounter a particularly challenging emotional theme in your music?
I don’t write my music per say. I freestyle and record it on my phone. I don’t write it down until I’m ready to record. So I usually lock in on a beat or topic and go until I feel I’m done.
How do you deal with criticism of your music, especially when it touches on personal experiences?
Well, actually. I welcome criticism more than praise because it helps me be better. Just because it’s personal doesn’t mean it’s good or your best. At the end of the day the consumer matters as well. I don’t take it to heart but definitely into consideration.
Do you believe music has the power to create social change, and if so, how?
Never really thought about it. But I couldd see it. If you listen to my stories and music, it’s passionate, real and relatable. I’m not speaking just for me, but millions of people who have been through similar circumstances.
Can you share the story behind your latest album/project?
“Still Dreaming” is like a personal memoir. It’s dives deeper in my personal life than any other project I’ve released. Of course it has plenty of bangas too! Most definitely my best body of work to date. Hoping my fans and everyone in between feels the same.
