Cat Feeder Plugged Into Computer: ‘Should I Be Worried?’

What started off as a simple attempt to feed his cat ended up being a cybersecurity concern.

“I plugged my cat’s automatic feeder, using the USB-C port, into my computer for charging, and all of a sudden, there’s a bunch of command prompts open and suddenly closing and stuff. Should I be worried?” Max explains.

People in the comments section have varied ideas about what’s going on.

“Meow ware,” cleverly jokes one comment.

“Is this a joke BTW or real? If it’s real it’s unlikely your cats water bowl of all things would have malware and might just be your computer trying to mount it/access the device thinking it’s something with file storage but failing?” offers one person as a logical explanation.

“Honestly in all likelihood, it’s just old. Designed to work better on an older operating system, so it does a bunch of command prompt checks. Can also happen when you plug in old flash drives, regardless of what’s on it,” says another.

Automatic Cat Feeder: Is It Worth It?

While it’s unclear if the cat feeder inconveniently ruined Max’s computer, comparatively, it sure has conveniently saved him from tons of feeding time for his cat. Automatic cat feeders are a cat owner’s and a cat’s best friend.

The Class Act Cats site states one of the best reasons to get an automatic cat feeder: Automatic feeders avoid your cat waking you up in the morning for food. Cats are notorious for causing havoc in the morning, scratching your door and meowing in the early hours of the day for food. An automatic cat feeder fixes that issue by dispensing food in the morning automatically.

However, the site cautions against using an automatic cat feeder instead of a cat sitter if you’re out of town.

“I’m in no way endorsing using automatic feeders as a way to leave your cat unattended for the weekend. It’s not a great idea to leave them at home alone without being checked on at least once a day,” the article says.
