South Carolina woman orders at Red Lobster. Then she asks for jumbo shrimp in the shrimp scampi. Then she takes a phone call mid-order: ‘Not cute’

‘A server’s worst nightmare.’

A woman becomes an example of what not to do when ordering at Red Lobster after her relative posts her asking for jumbo shrimp in her shrimp scampi.

TikTok creator @naeeegotti posted a video of her relative during their annual birthday trip to Red Lobster.

“This woman right here knows she’s funny as [expletive] when it comes to ordering food,” @naeeegotti wrote in the caption. “She loves Red Lobster. We go every year for her birthday.”

What (And How) Does This Woman Order at Red Lobster?

The video shows the woman looking at a server off-camera. She is wearing a shirt that says, “I don’t give a,” accompanied by cartoon images of a rat and a donkey.

“I want the shrimp alfredo with extra shrimp,” she says. “Can they put jumbo shrimp in my shrimp alfredo?”

This statement causes a brief moment of confusion between her and the server. After a back-and-forth, the server agrees that the kitchen can add extra shrimp to her order.

As the woman is about to complete her order by selecting a side, she receives a phone call from an “Uncle Harry.” Instead of finishing the order, she instructs the server to take her companion’s order while she answers the call.

Restaurant Servers Are Not Amused

Restaurant servers in the comments section of the video did not find the video as funny as @naeeegotti. In fact, several of them wrote to say that it actually annoyed them.

“The kind of customer I’d pay my coworker $10 to take for me,” wrote one person.

“This is not funny, cute, or acceptable,” a second person wrote. “There’s a way to speak to and conduct yourself at a restaurant.”

“As a server, it’s not funny,” a third person said. “It’s aggravating.”

However, at least one server appeared to take the woman’s antics in stride. 

“Oh, that’s when I hit ‘em with ‘I’ll give y’all a minute’ and walk the [expletive] off,” the person wrote. “Gone talk to Uncle Harry, boo.”

Is It Really Rude to Take a Call While Ordering?

Mashed spoke to a psychologist about why it’s such a social violation to be talking on the phone while ordering at a restaurant. Basically, not only does it make the restaurant employee feel like a glorified kiosk, but it also makes the ordering itself take a lot longer than it normally would.

A person posted to a Facebook group on etiquette and manners to ask why it’s such a big deal to take a call at a restaurant. 

“Technically, it probably shouldn’t be,” wrote one person. “However, when you are on the phone you lose track of your surroundings and often begin to talk louder, which can be disturbing. In McDonald’s, it shouldn’t be a problem. Place with a waitress/waiter? You might consider delaying your call or making it quick.”

A second person said, “It just is. It tells others ‘you’re not important.’ Besides, no one wants to hear your conversation.”

Another person said, “Eating is like praying, as I was told. It deserves your full attention. Unless absolutely necessary, refrain from taking calls at the table to truly appreciate your meal.”
