‘Union is failing us’: South Carolina UPS driver makes her routine deliveries. Then she learns about a shocking new rule from corporate

Karis (@lilmoonhead), a South Carolina-based UPS driver, was joking but also not mincing words about the whisper campaign running through her workplace. In a viral TikTok, she rips into rumors that UPS is installing surveillance cameras in the backs of its delivery trucks—and that her union isn’t doing a thing about it.
“Better start counting your days,” she warns the company, before cutting to the raw indignity of the situation. “I ain’t got nothing to hide but my white booty while I’m pissing in my cup throughout the day.”
UPS Driver Exposes Camera Rumors
Pissing in cups isn’t hyperbole. It represents industry shorthand for a workforce stretched past the limits of route schedules, bathroom access, and basic dignity. And now, says Karis, the company may be adding cameras to that equation.
“I’ll be damned if these rumors are correct,” she says. “Union is failing us.”
The rumors aren’t baseless. UPS has been quietly installing Lytx DriveCam systems in its package cars since at least 2020, initially across centers in Oklahoma and Texas. The devices feature dual sensors—one road-facing and one driver-facing—and can record video and audio inside the truck. They can even stream live footage to management.
What About the Teamsters Agreement?
The 2023 UPS-Teamsters National Master Agreement, trumpeted as a historic win, includes language stating that vehicles may not be equipped with inward-facing cameras. During negotiations, Teamsters General President Sean O’Brien declared that UPS could not use data from any type of technology to discipline drivers. But UPS has apparently navigated the prohibition through a linguistic/legalese sleight of hand, classifying the inward-facing component as a “sensor” rather than a camera.
As The New Republic reported last summer, the surveillance apparatus extends well beyond cameras. One Long Island, New York, driver told the magazine that taking a sip of water triggers a distracted driving alert. Another driver, outside Orlando, Florida, recalled being summoned to a supervisor’s office over two unaccounted-for minutes at a delivery address the day prior, with his boss reciting his movements down to the second.
The Peanut Gallery Weighs in on UPS Truck Camera Rumors
“Wait [they] can afford cameras but not a/c?” joked one person.
Many noted the lack of union support. “Unions really are a failure these days, I’m a teamster and they’re completely useless,” one person wrote.
Another person, replying to a statement of unions not working, said they need to look at the whole picture. “Free healthcare and six figures? Just bc every blade of grass isn’t green doesn’t mean overall the lawn [doesn’t look] [expletive] good,” they commented.
Eyes on the Road, Eyes on You
Until recently, the camera issue had simmered somewhat since the 2023 contract fight, when “Wages Up, Cameras Off!” became a rallying cry. But now drivers like Karis are suggesting their unions have put them between a rock and a hard place. One woman claimed that UPS could be installing miniature cameras “in the vents” and recording unbeknownst to the driver. “They’re looking to get us,” she warned.
For rank-and-file Teamsters, the gap between what was promised and what’s been delivered continues to widen—one “sensor” at a time.
AllHipHop reached out to Karis via TikTok direct message and comment. It also emailed UPS and Teamsters Local 509, covering most of South Carolina. We will update this story if any party responds.
