‘Got mine done about 6 years ago and have regretted it since.’
LASIK surgery is often advertised as a way to reduce dependence on glasses and contact lenses. However, one Ohio man says the procedure left him dealing with vision issues he prefers wearing glasses over.
In a recent video, Titanium Talk (@titanium_talk) explains that he underwent LASIK hoping to improve his eyesight. Instead, he says the surgery introduced several new visual problems that have affected his daily life.
‘I Actually Was Able to See Better With My Glasses‘
“Every surgery surgeon is typically wearing glasses. They don’t get the surgery done. Look that up and see why; it’s very interesting,” Titanium Talk says.
He goes on to describe the side effects he experienced after the procedure.
“Ever since then, I wake up to seeing halos around. I see blue, green, yellowish halos around bright lights, and the moon had a halo around it. I can’t see the green light very well. It’s blurry … It burns out my retina very easily. Green traffic lights at night are terrible to look at. White and black-colored lettering on dark mode really bothers my eyes a lot, too,” Titanium Talk continued.
He does admit that he is able to see clearer than before and read things better, but it still isn’t as good as his vision was with his glasses, and the pros don’t outweigh the cons six years later. Ultimately, he advises viewers not to get LASIK.
‘Its Like No Dentist Has Veneers. They Know’
Titanium Talk’s video has 497,200 views and 30,000 likes as of this writing. Viewers had plenty to say about his experience, with some sharing their successes and others their fears.
“I got lasik. Like 12 years ago. Changed my life. Still see perfectly,” shares one commenter.
“My optometrist still wears glasses. That’s the only reason I need to not get it,” says another.
“I have a family member that has problems since doing it. She has blurriness and really dry eyes now,” another viewer responds.
“People either say it’s the best thing that’s ever happened to them or the worst decision they’ve ever made,” someone else weighs in.
“Interesting. I had lasik done in 1999 and never regretted it,” someone else says.
Can LASIK Cause Vision Issues?
Some visual side effects after LASIK are possible. Yes, many patients report improved vision following the procedure, but many report similar side effects to Titanium Talk, according to an article by Michigan Medicine.
“Although LASIK may cause dry eyes for up to three months (and can be managed with artificial tears), the odds of it becoming a permanent issue are rare. Another uncommon side effect: nighttime glare or halos. Still, said Hood, ‘the risk is much lower than it used to be and the technology is much better. The treatment zone is much larger now, covering the entire cornea,’” the article says, quoting Dr. Christopher Hood, M.D., a clinical associate professor of ophthalmology and visual sciences at the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center.
Hood mentions that the technology for LASIK has improved significantly over the past few years. Considering that Titanium Talk got his procedure done about six years ago, it could be a safer bet now. Still, it’s unfortunate that Titanium Talk acquired this allegedly uncommon side effect.
It’s important to note that some people are just not eligible for LASIK. For example, if you have a condition called presbyopia, you’re most likely not able to get LASIK. Being 40 or over also gives you a higher chance of not qualifying, although it isn’t an automatic no.
Titanium Talk’s video has sparked a larger conversation online about whether the convenience of living without glasses is worth the risks so many claim to experience after LASIK.
