Donald Trump drops a risque “threesome” joke about awarding himself and his sons the Medal of Honor during the Theodore Roosevelt Library dedication.

Donald Trump made a comment at the opening of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in Medora, North Dakota, that had people doing double takes on Wednesday.

While discussing the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military decoration, he dropped a line that caught everyone’s attention.

The Medal of Honor is reserved for military personnel who distinguish themselves through gallantry and intrepidity in combat. Trump’s joke centered on the idea of becoming part of an exclusive club.

He elaborated by saying he’d award one of his sons the medal “for their genius at hunting” and give himself one “for taking on Russia, Russia, Russia or something.”

“I see my two beautiful sons sitting there. I think I’m going to give one to myself, one to them, and we’ll have a threesome,” Trump said during his remarks on July 1.

The comment drew laughs from the crowd, though the phrasing definitely raised some eyebrows.

Earlier that same day, Trump had made similar remarks during a ceremony where he donated Theodore Roosevelt’s Medal of Honor to the library.

He said, “I want to give one to myself, but they tell me and I’m not allowed to. What have I done to deserve it and they couldn’t think of anything, so I’m not happy with them today.”

fThe comment was lighthearted but also highlighted his frustration about not being eligible for the award himself.

The historical context makes the joke land differently. Theodore Roosevelt remains the only president to have received the Medal of Honor, which according to USA TODAY was awarded to him in 2001 by President Bill Clinton for his actions during the Spanish-American War.

His son, Theodore Roosevelt Jr., also received the medal for his valor on D-Day during World War II.

The MacArthur family holds the distinction of being the first father-son pair to both receive the honor, with Arthur earning it during the Civil War and Douglas receiving it for his work in the Philippines during World War II.
