‘For a restaurant in a plaza next to a Dollar Tree?’: Georgia woman goes to new local restaurant. Then they turn her away because she has no reservation. It’s empty

‘Watch it be shutdown by next week.’
A woman caught the internet’s attention after sharing that she was turned away from a restaurant in a suburb of Atlanta for not having a reservation, despite the restaurant being empty.
On June 21, @_lifewitdri shared her experience being turned down from the empty restaurant in Jonesboro, Georgia, in a viral TikTok that has amassed over 513,000 views as of this writing.
“If you have a new business jumping out of the ground, you shouldn’t turn down no money,” the customer shared.
Why Did the Restaurant Turn Down the Customer?
“Me and my friends went to A Taste of Tara for brunch on Father’s Day,” she said. “And they won’t let us in ’cause we don’t have a reservation. Ain’t nobody in here.”
Overwhelmingly, the comments sided with the customer’s frustration and were generally confused by the restaurant’s alleged actions.
“Reservations for a restaurant in a plaza next to a Dollar Tree?” wrote one commenter.
“Not accepting a walk in I’m an empty restaurant is wicked,” commented a second. “They didn’t wanna work.”
Many comments were quick to describe this service as typical for Atlanta. “Atlanta restaurants love sabotaging themselves,” added another.
Why Do Atlanta Restaurants Have a Reputation for Poor Service?
Restaurants in the United States generally have broad discretion to require reservations, limit walk-ins, or refuse service to customers. However, they are not allowed to do so while discriminating against people based on protected characteristics. This means a restaurant can legally tell potential diners that tables are reserved even if the dining room appears empty.
Eater Atlanta reports that restaurants spend significant sums on reservation platforms and often prep food based on expected bookings. Even a small number of cancellations can meaningfully reduce daily revenue. This has led some owners to enforce stricter reservation rules than customers might expect.
Atlanta, in particular, has reportedly experienced above-average no-show rates compared to many other American cities. This encourages some operators to prioritize reservations over spontaneous walk-ins.
This has resulted in a broader perception that Atlanta’s dining culture can sometimes place exclusivity, ambiance, and social status ahead of hospitality. Complaints about arbitrary dress codes, mandatory gratuities, complicated reservation systems, and inconsistent customer service have circulated online for years, becoming something of a local stereotype.
The city has become a major destination for conventions, tourism, and entertainment. As a result, there is demand for experience-driven restaurants that often operate more like event spaces than traditional eateries. Reservation systems, timed seating windows, and curated atmospheres have become increasingly common, particularly in popular brunch destinations.
At the same time, labor shortages, rising costs, and ongoing debates over tipping have placed additional strain on customer service across the industry. Restaurant owners have warned that staffing challenges and changing consumer expectations are affecting the dining experience nationwide, not just in Atlanta.
