Donald Trump To Suck Up The Oxygen At Smoke-Filled World Cup Final

Donald Trump shows up to the World Cup final blaming Canada for wildfire smoke and threatening tariffs while handing out the trophy.

Donald Trump is showing up to the World Cup final on Sunday with Canadian wildfire smoke hanging over MetLife Stadium, and he’s already blaming Ottawa for the whole mess.

The president’s been threatening tariffs on Canada over what he’s calling filthy, polluted air that’s been choking the Northeast all week, turning what should be a celebration of soccer into another political headache.

Trump’s got a full weekend planned. he hit New York City on Friday for a FIFA reception at Trump Tower and next he will roll down to New Jersey for the championship match between Spain and Argentina.

Here’s the thing about Trump and this tournament though.

He sat out every single game until now, letting other administration members like Marco Rubio catch matches while he stayed away.

According to the White House, his attendance will cap what’s been the most watched, most secure, and most successful World Cup in American history.

Over 3.6 million people packed stadiums across the country, and when the US played Paraguay, 27.5 million Americans tuned in. That’s the kind of numbers that make any president want to show up for the finale.

But Trump’s already got a track record of meddling with this tournament that didn’t exactly work out.

He called FIFA president Gianni Infantino directly to review the red card given to US striker Folarin Balogun, and the suspension got lifted.

Then the US went out and lost to Belgium 4-1 in a brutal exit, with plenty of people blaming Trump’s interference for throwing off the team’s momentum.

His history of showing up at major sporting events like the Super Bowl, Daytona 500, Ryder Cup, UFC fights, and the NBA Finals has always been about making the moment about him, and this World Cup final is no different.

The smoke situation is actually the perfect storm for Trump’s brand of politics.

He’s not just attending the game, he’s using the air quality crisis to make headlines about tariffs and blame Canada, turning a natural disaster into a trade war talking point.

Meanwhile, the actual soccer match is about to happen with all this chaos swirling around it, and Trump’s made sure everyone knows he’s the one in control of the narrative.

FIFA and the White House have been meeting about whether the smoke will actually impact play, but Trump’s already moved past that concern and straight into using it as leverage.

The real question is whether Sunday’s final will be remembered for Spain and Argentina’s performance or for Trump’s presence and the Canadian smoke controversy he’s weaponized.

His attendance at major sporting events has always created security headaches and divided crowds, but this time he’s got a natural disaster to work with, and he’s not wasting the opportunity.

Trump’s already announced he’ll be handing out the trophy himself, making sure his image is tied directly to whoever wins the championship.
