Grand jury takes over the Nolan Wells investigation as family pushes for answers in the 18-year-old’s mysterious death.
Ben Crump is pushing hard on the Nolan Wells case as investigators prepare to hand everything over to a grand jury that’ll decide whether charges get filed.
The 18-year-old football player vanished July 4 after heading out to Horn Island with friends, and his body turned up two days later in the water, leaving way more questions than answers about what actually happened during those missing hours.
Now the investigation moves into a new phase where a jury gets to see all the evidence and determine if anyone’s getting charged.
The family’s attorney has been hammering on one detail that keeps nagging at people following this case: Wells’ cell phone. Crump made it clear that an 18-year-old kid wouldn’t just leave his phone behind, yet somehow the family found it before police even secured it as evidence.

That phone matters because Horn Island’s got spotty cell service and zero surveillance cameras, making it potentially the most important piece of evidence for understanding his final moments on that island.
Crump’s independent investigators are fielding between 50 and 100 calls every single day from people claiming they’ve got information about what went down.
That volume of tips tells you the public isn’t buying the initial explanations about how a young athlete ended up dead after what was supposed to be a routine boat outing.
Sheriff John Ledbetter told ABC News that “Nolan Wells’ family deserves a thorough and factual investigation,” acknowledging the mounting pressure his department’s facing.
CNN law enforcement analyst Charles Ramsey said nothing about the case appears particularly unusual from a procedural standpoint, but he acknowledged understanding why race concerns have become central to public discussion around how authorities handled everything.
The Congressional Black Caucus released a statement saying “too many questions remain unanswered,” adding their voice to growing demands for transparency and a full accounting of what happened.
Wells’ funeral is scheduled for Monday, July 20, 2026 at Center Pointe Church in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, according to ABC News, giving his family and community a chance to mourn while the grand jury begins its work determining next steps.
