A British pop icon with 20-plus years sober fired back at cocaine accusations after a viral World Cup interview clip had the internet convinced.
Robbie Williams shut down the internet Monday morning after a wild clip from his World Cup broadcast appearance had the whole world convinced he dropped a rock of cocaine on live German television.
The incident happened Sunday night after Williams performed the official FIFA anthem “Desire” at the 2026 World Cup closing ceremony at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, sharing the stage with Madonna, Justin Bieber, Shakira, and Burna Boy.
During a post-show interview with German broadcaster MagentaTV, a small white object fell from the area around Williams’ face onto the microphone in front of him.
He picked it up, and in a move that only made things worse, accidentally stuck it to his forehead while fixing his hair. Clips of the moment spread across social media at full speed, with users convinced they had just watched the best-selling British solo artist in history casually drop blow on live TV.

Given his well-documented history with addiction, the clip hit different than it would for most celebrities.
Williams has been openly vocal about his past battles with cocaine, alcohol, and ecstasy during his years in the boy group Take That and early in his solo run.
He’s spoken about coming dangerously close to death during a six-day drug binge in France in 1996, and Sir Elton John is credited with helping him take his first steps toward sobriety.
Williams has marked more than 20 years clean and has never been shy about crediting recovery as the foundation of everything he’s built since.
Rather than go dark or issue a formal statement, Williams leaned all the way into the chaos on Instagram Monday morning.
He opened the video as if preparing to make a serious confession, building suspense before sticking his tongue out to reveal a handful of mints.

The caption read, “Just woke up and feeling… Mint.” He said the object was a half-chewed mint that had fallen from his mouth, not his nose, which lines up with what many sharp-eyed viewers had already clocked in the original clip.
“It was deeply unprofessional and people worried about me,” he said in the video before breaking into a grin. “But it’s OK, because I had several more!”
The whole thing adds another chapter to a career full of them for Williams, who holds the record for the most UK number one albums by any solo artist with 16 chart-toppers.
His current album Britpop reached that milestone earlier this year and even features Black Sabbath guitarist Tommy Iommi. Hip-Hop heads may know him best from his 2002 collaboration with Faithless MC M### Jazz on the Grammy-nominated track “My Culture,” which fused trip-hop, world music and spoken word into a crossover hit that charted in the UK top ten.
