Bobby Yan Brings Hip-Hop Roots To Tubi Thriller “My Husband’s Sister”

Bobby Yan says Hip-Hop still fuels his filmmaking as the veteran director brings his latest suspense thriller, “My Husband’s Sister,” to Tubi on Aug. 21.

Bobby Yan returns with another suspense thriller, but the visual style behind “My Husband’s Sister” was forged long before he stepped behind the camera for streaming films. The director, who built his reputation shooting more than 100 Hip-Hop music videos and documenting rap culture during its formative years, says those experiences continue to shape every project he makes.

“My Husband’s Sister” premieres Aug. 21 on Tubi and follows a reformed con artist whose second chance at love is threatened when a murderous caregiver from his past resurfaces. As the vengeful woman methodically targets the wealthy woman who helped him rebuild his life, redemption and survival collide in a psychological game where every move carries devastating consequences.

Yan believes audiences are in for a thriller that balances suspense with cinematic style.

“My Husband’s Sister is a tense and fun thriller about a vengeful woman who will stop at nothing to bring down her foster brother’s marriage and the new life he’s built, one carefully placed move at a time. My roots are originally in Hip-Hop music videos, and that background informs my distinct visual language and strong cinematic style that carries across the films I’ve directed on platforms including Tubi, Netflix, Lifetime, Hulu, Disney+, and Paramount+. The cast and crew were great to work with. I think the audience will really love this one.”

Yan’s connection to Hip-Hop stretches back decades. Before directing feature films, he worked on more than 100 music videos and learned the craft under legendary television pioneer Ralph McDaniels at Video Music Box. His first major music video project was Master P’s “No More Tears,” and his career eventually expanded into television and films for multiple streaming platforms.

During a previous interview with AllHipHop, Yan explained that his creative approach was born from those early experiences in music.

“I direct from Spirit. I think that’s the best way to describe it. I’ve been doing this for a really long time. I started in the music industry with music videos many, many years ago. So I directed over a hundred music videos, and I think from that, directing is like music to me.”

He also credited Hip-Hop with shaping the way he approaches storytelling.

“Hip-Hop taught me to think outside the box. It’s about finding your voice and staying true to it.”

That philosophy has carried Yan from the music world into a filmmaking career that now spans Tubi, Netflix, Lifetime, Hulu, Disney+ and Paramount+. Yet despite the move into feature films, he has never distanced himself from the culture that launched his career.

In another conversation with AllHipHop, Yan said Hip-Hop remains central to everything he creates.

“Everything I do is for the culture.”

He later added:

“I don’t think I could be where I’m at right now if it wasn’t for Hip-Hop… it’s a part of my DNA.”

“My Husband’s Sister” was created by Ashley Brittney and written by La Jill Hunt. The film stars Marcia Harvey, Joyce Glenn, Mikhail Keíze and Tina Fears.

As Yan continues expanding his résumé across the streaming landscape, his latest thriller serves as another reminder that the visual language of Hip-Hop continues to influence Hollywood storytellers in unexpected ways. For Yan, the journey from music videos to feature films has never been about leaving one world behind. It has been about bringing the energy, creativity and fearlessness of Hip-Hop into every frame.
