Reggie Wright Jr. maintains his innocence as Keefe D’s trial begins, rejecting decades of conspiracy theories linking him to Tupac’s murder.
Reggie Wright Jr is stepping into the spotlight as jury selection kicks off in one of Hip-Hop’s most consequential trials, and he’s making it clear that decades of conspiracy theories won’t define his legacy.
The former Death Row Records security chief sat down to address the mounting pressure from Keefe D’s defense strategy, which has pivoted to blaming him for orchestrating Tupac’s 1996 murder.
With prosecutors preparing their case against the 63-year-old gang leader, Wright’s testimony is expected to become central to understanding what really happened that September night in Las Vegas.
The relationship between Wright and Keefe D tells its own story. Wright worked in law enforcement from 1985 to 1996 and said he only heard Keefe D’s name during that time.

According to TMZ, their first actual meeting came years later at a grocery store called Henry’s.
“His wife was working at a grocery store. It’s called Henry’s. And I was walking out. I guess he noticed me coming out of the grocery store. He walked up and said, ‘Hey, little Reg, you know who I am?’ And I looked at him and pretty much said, ‘Oh.’ And he introduced himself as Keefe D from Compton Southside And I laughed. It was funny to me. I asked him, ‘They still allow you to claim Compton knowing that all the allegations and the snitching that he had done? He was pretty much talking running his mouth while he was in jail then,’” Wright explained.
The encounter reveals how distant their connection truly was, contradicting claims they’d known each other for decades.
Wright’s alibi for the MGM Grand incident is straightforward and unshakeable.
“I wasn’t there. I wasn’t in the entourage and I wasn’t at the MGM hotel when the the uh the incident that happened in the hotel that we all know about between Mr. Shakur, Mr. Knight, their entourage and Mr. Anderson,” he stated.
Prosecutors allege that Keefe D orchestrated the shooting as retaliation after Tupac and his crew beat up Davis’ nephew Orlando Anderson at the MGM Grand hours before the drive-by.
Wright’s presence at that location would’ve been crucial to any conspiracy theory, but he wasn’t there.
The legal pressure on Wright has been relentless for nearly three decades, yet law enforcement has never charged him with involvement.
“No one from law enforcement has ever accused me to have anything to do with the death of Tupac Shakur other than a disgraced police officer by the name of Russell Poole who unfortunately died because he had bad health,” Wright said.
Poole, the former LAPD detective who investigated the case, had theorized that Wright Jr. and others connected to Death Row were involved in the shooting.
Poole’s claims, however, never resulted in charges and remain unproven allegations from a retired officer.
Wright is confident that the trial will finally separate fact from fiction.
Keefe D’s 2019 memoir “Compton Street Legend” has become the prosecution’s roadmap, with the former gang leader claiming he was in the passenger seat of the Cadillac and passed a gun to the back seat.
In his book, Davis wrote that Tupac and his entourage “crossed the line” when they beat up Anderson, justifying the retaliation narrative.
Yet Davis has also publicly claimed that Wright orchestrated the entire hit, a contradiction that prosecutors will likely exploit. The trial is expected to last about a month, with jury selection having begun on August 10, 2026.
