MC SHA-ROCK, George Clinton, To Be Inducted Into North Carolina Music Hall Of Fame

MC SHA-ROCK, Hip-Hop’s first female MC and Funky 4 + 1 pioneer, is being inducted into the 2026 North Carolina Music Hall of Fame.
MC SHA-ROCK just got her flowers from North Carolina, and it’s about time the culture recognized what she’s been building since the late seventies.
The Wilmington native is being inducted into the 2026 North Carolina Music Hall of Fame, joining a class that includes George Clinton, Sugar Bear from Experience Unlimited, the Chapel Hill rock band Arrogance, Sugar Hill Records founder Barry Poss, and jazz composer Billy Strayhorn.
This recognition marks a major moment for someone who literally invented the blueprint for female MCs in Hip-Hop.
Back in 1976, MC SHA-ROCK started as a B-girl in the South Bronx before becoming the first woman to record on wax with a Hip-Hop group.
She was the “+1” in Funky 4 + 1, and when that crew hit Saturday Night Live on February 14, 1981, hosted by Debbie Harry of Blondie, they changed everything.
Performing “That’s The Joint,” they became the first Hip-Hop act ever on national television, introducing millions of people to a sound that was still being born.
MC SHA-ROCK didn’t just show up either. She set the standard for how women would approach the mic, the stage, and the craft itself.
What makes this induction even more significant is how long it took to get here.
MC SHA-ROCK spent decades building the foundation that every female rapper after her would stand on, yet her legacy got buried under Hip-Hop’s double standards and the industry’s tendency to overlook women’s contributions.
She helped establish early standards for lyrical delivery, microphone technique, and live performance during Hip-Hop’s formative years.
The North Carolina Music Hall of Fame, which has been honoring musicians since 1994, requires at least ten years of national prominence and strong ties to the state.
MC SHA-ROCK checks every box.
The induction ceremony happens on October 15 at the Charles Mack Citizen Center in Mooresville, and she’s sharing the stage with some serious company.
