YG’s new song “Tiffany” has ignited a heated debate over transgender representation, violence and if the track is social commentary or facts.
It took a song about a trans woman to get me realizing YG had an album out.
YG is catching serious heat over the one.
The West Coast rapper’s latest album, The Gentleman’s Club, features a track called “Tiffany,” and it has quickly become one of the most controversial songs this year. The song centers on a transgender woman who reveals her identity to a man moments before a sexual encounter. Whoa.
In the song, a person named Chris meets Tiffany at a club and eventually brings her home. Just before things become physical, she stops him and says, “Wait, I got something to tell you… I’m a trans woman.” Before we get into the spoilers, here is the song:
The revelation immediately changes the mood. Chris reacts angrily, while Tiffany repeatedly apologizes and pleads, “Please don’t hurt me.”
That is a long song! Over 6 minutes long is like a marathon in the streaming era.
Some people believe YG is shining a light on a dangerous reality that transgender women, especially Black transgender women, face every day. Others argue the song reinforces a narrative that has historically been linked to violence against trans people. I think a lot of straight men think about this scenario. The story exists. How are people taking it? Will it create more bad attitudes or just document reality?
And then there’s the comments section, which had plenty jokes.

People seem split over this one.
The timing is especially wild. This is Pride Month and Black Music Month. For now, YG has remained silent on the backlash and the response he has gotten. But, he recorded a whole video promoting this song. So, he knows what he’s doing. He has successfully caused us to have a larger cultural conversation.
And if YG intended to get people talking, mission accomplished.
