Lizzo opens up about her B#### album flopping commercially and how the disappointing numbers made her question her self-worth for a moment.
Lizzo opened up about her latest album project tanking commercially and she’s finally addressing what that means for her career trajectory right now.
During an appearance on the “Proto Pop” podcast with Zachary Hourihane, the Grammy-winning artist discussed the disappointing performance of her new record B####, which dropped on June 5 and failed to chart on the Billboard 200.
She explained that the numbers hit her harder than she expected because she genuinely believed in the music she created.
The album moved just 2,649 copies in its first week, a staggering decline from her 2022 project Special, which debuted with 39,000 units and landed at number two on the Billboard chart.
When asked for a real answer about how she was feeling, Lizzo didn’t sugarcoat it. “I hurt my own feelings,” she said, describing how she spent several days feeling stressed and genuinely sad about the reception.
She acknowledged that she based her self-worth on those numbers for a brief moment, which she now recognizes as a mistake.
Lizzo attributed the shift to major changes in the music industry over the past three years and her altered connection with audiences globally. She explained that she had to come to terms with the reality that her relationship with the world musically is fundamentally different now than it was before.
The second week brought even worse results, with only 650 copies sold and under 900,000 streams, according to music data company Luminate.
Despite this reality, she decided to shake it off and keep moving forward with her career.
When the internet started joking about the Khia Asylum, a term used to describe formerly successful pop stars who’ve faded from prominence, Lizzo pushed back hard.
She emphasized that she’s a successful artist with multiple Grammy Awards, world records, and a diamond-certified record to her name.
She also called the meme a tool used to bully artists and have power over them, particularly targeting women and Black women in the industry.
