Robert Downey Jr. Unveiled As Doctor Doom In Avengers: Doomsday Trailer

Marvel has officially unveiled Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, giving a look at the former hero as its next villain.

Robert Downey Jr. finally stepped into Marvel’s darkest role as the studio unveiled its first official look at Doctor Doom ahead of one of the biggest weeks on the comic book calendar.

Marvel Studios released the first public footage of Downey as Victor von Doom in promotional material for Avengers: Doomsday, ending months of speculation surrounding the actor’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The reveal arrives just days before San Diego Comic-Con, where Marvel is expected to showcase more from its upcoming slate.

The teaser marks a dramatic shift for Downey, whose portrayal of Tony Stark helped launch the MCU with 2008’s Iron Man. After anchoring the franchise for more than a decade and ending Stark’s story in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, the Oscar winner now returns as one of Marvel’s most feared villains.

Marvel began teasing the footage Sunday night through the official Fantastic Four social media accounts, releasing a brief exchange between Reed Richards and Sue Storm.

“How long do we have?” Sue Storm, played by Vanessa Kirby, asks.

“Not long,” Reed Richards, portrayed by Pedro Pascal, replies.

Until now, footage featuring Downey’s Doctor Doom had been limited to private presentations during CinemaCon in Las Vegas and other industry events.

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to arrive in theaters on Dec. 18 and serves as Marvel’s next major crossover event. According to the studio, the film will bring together heroes from multiple realities as they confront an unprecedented threat.

“The story of Doomsday is inspired by a very famous comic run in which universes are colliding and earths encounter one another and different timelines encounter one another,” Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige previously told Entertainment Weekly. “And in movie speak, what that allows us to do is get different casts from different franchises.”

That approach results in one of Marvel’s most ambitious ensemble casts to date.

Veterans from Fox’s original X-Men films are returning, including Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, James Marsden as Cyclops, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, Alan C###### as Nightcrawler and Rebecca Romijn as Mystique.

Channing Tatum is also returning following his long-awaited debut as Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine.

The newest generation of Marvel heroes will also play a central role. Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Joseph Quinn reprise their roles as Marvel’s First Family following The Fantastic Four: First Steps, while additional heroes from across the MCU are expected to join the multiversal showdown.

For many Marvel followers, however, the biggest takeaway wasn’t the expanding roster. It was seeing the face that once defined the franchise return in an entirely different light. After spending 11 years saving the Marvel universe as Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. now appears ready to become the greatest threat it has ever faced.
