The NYPD detective who built hip-hop’s first intelligence unit and investigated a number of serious rat beefs and murders, has died.

Derrick Parker has passed away, his family confirmed Saturday in a statement posted to social media.

Derrick Parker was described as “our beloved brother, uncle, and friend,” with no cause of death given and memorial services still forthcoming.

For two decades, Parker walked both sides of a line that most people couldn’t even find.

He was NYPD, but he was at every rap show, every club night, every spot where the music and the streets crossed paths. He knew these artists not by their albums but by their rap sheets.

It started quietly, just Parker and one other detective inside the gang division, no official title and no real mandate.

After Biggie’s murder flooded New York with death threats, the NYPD moved him into the gang unit full-time to monitor the rap industry.

In an exclusive interview with AllHipHop’s Grouchy Greg, Parker described how Biggie’s funeral became his turning point.

“I called the department and warned them of the repercussions that were coming back to New York,” he said. “They shrugged it off.”

When the threats hit, the department finally wanted answers, and Parker became the go-to man.

He built files on Jay-Z, Cam’ron, Busta Rhymes, 50 Cent and dozens more, then shared that intel with departments across the country. But what separated him from every other cop trying to work the hip-hop beat was something simpler than surveillance.

“I had to earn the respect of the rappers, not to go out there and treat them all like criminals,” Derrick Parker told AllHipHop. “I earned their respect and that’s why they could come to me, and I can go to the people that other cops couldn’t approach.”

He was the first New York detective on the Biggie Smalls case and worked on the Tupac Shakur shooting investigations.

AllHipHop covered the Jay murder case for two decades, and Parker’s name ran through that story from start to finish.

He retired in 2002 after 20 years on the force, but he never really stepped away.

Parker kept showing up long after most people expected him to disappear.

AllHipHop quoted him at the scene of the G-Baby slaying in 2010, still attending industry events years after hanging up the badge.

He wrote Notorious C.O.P., detailing everything he knew about the Biggie, Tupac, and Jay investigations and what he believed law enforcement got dead wrong.

His reach stretched from Hip-Hop parties to federal investigations, and he stayed a media voice on rap crime right up until the end.

His family says memorial services will be announced and shared as soon as they’re available.
