MC Sha-Rock was included in Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc’s prestigious 2026 honorary membership class.
MC Sha-Rock added another historic milestone to her already groundbreaking career after being named an honorary member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. as part of the organization’s 2026 TrailblazerΣ Honorary Membership Class.
The legendary Hip-Hop pioneer, born Sharon Jackson, was recognized alongside an accomplished group of women from fields including sports, entertainment, business, education and public service.
In a statement, the sorority described the class as women who “embody the spirit of service, the power of purpose, and the unwavering belief that women in every field, every community, and every corner of the world, hold the capacity to change what is possible.”
For Hip-Hop culture, the honor represents another acknowledgment of Sha-Rock’s enduring influence. She is widely recognized as the first female MC in Hip-Hop and she helped redefine what was possible for women in the genre. As a member of the pioneering Funky 4 + 1, Sha-Rock broke barriers on stage, on television and within a blossoming movement that was still finding its identity.

Founded in 1922 at Butler University, Sigma Gamma Rho has long celebrated women whose work extends beyond professional success into service and community leadership. The 2026 honorary class reflects that mission by recognizing pioneers whose contributions have opened doors for future generations.
Sha-Rock joined an impressive list of inductees that includes Emmy Award-winning author and advocate Sonia Manzano, Black Girl Sunscreen founder Shontay Lundy, Walt Disney Imagineering executive creative producer Charita Carter, three-time Olympian Michelle Carter, actress and media personality Tami Roman Youngblood, Olympic gold medalist and former Harlem Globetrotter Lynette Woodard, singer and producer Dame Lisa Simone and several other leaders from across the country.
The sorority announced the class by stating:
“We are pleased to announce our latest Honorary Membership Class!
We would like to congratulate the work of the Honorary Membership Committee under the leadership of International First Grand Anti-Basileus Miranda Moore and Co-Chair Karin Sarratt.
The 2026 Boule Induction Class embodies the spirit of service, the power of purpose, and the unwavering belief that women in every field, every community, and every corner of the world, hold the capacity to change what is possible.
Please join us in celebrating our newest members also known as the ‘TrailblazerΣ Honorary Membership Class.’”
MC Sha-Rock now joins an exclusive group of Hip-Hop figures affiliated with Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. As a member of the 2026 TrailblazerΣ Honorary Membership Class, the pioneering MC becomes one of only a handful of rap artists to receive the distinction. She joins legendary lyricist MC Lyte, who was inducted as an honorary member in 2004 and has long represented the sorority publicly, as well as DJ Spinderella of Salt-N-Pepa, who is also an honorary member.
Sha-Rock’s induction carries added historical significance because she is widely recognized as the first female MC in Hip-Hop, making her inclusion alongside MC Lyte another powerful acknowledgment of the women who helped establish and elevate the culture.
The sorority’s honorary roster also includes celebrated music figures such as Marsha Ambrosius, Fantasia, Kelly Price, Martha Reeves and Dame Lisa Simone.
