50 Cent says making the movie “Get Rich or Die Tryin’” forced him to process trauma he’d been avoiding for years.
50 Cent opened up about the emotional toll of making his 2005 film debut, revealing how stepping into character forced him to confront trauma he’d been avoiding for years.
When the Queens native sat down with GQ to discuss his most iconic film roles, he didn’t shy away from the psychological weight of bringing his own story to the screen.
“Get Rich or Die Tryin’ was difficult because I didn’t realize how much it was shot out of sequence. It was almost therapeutic for me at the same time because they were asking me to go through these things that really were a part of my life that in one moment it was funny but then the next moment it wasn’t,” 50 Cent explained.
The production became something far deeper than just another Hollywood project trying to capitalize on a rapper’s name.

“I had experiences that were really rough experiences for me that I didn’t really deal with emotionally ahead of that and then I had to think about these things in order to get to a place where I could perform it,” 50 Cent explained.
The film came together because Interscope Records had just struck gold with Eminem’s “8 Mile” and wanted to replicate that formula with their rising star.
50 got the full treatment: Oscar-winning director Jim Sheridan, writer Terry Winters (who’d later pen The Wolf of Wall Street and The Sopranos), and legendary composer Quincy Jones handling the score.
The cast included powerhouses like Terrence Howard, Viola Davis, Tory Kittles, and Bill Duke, all bringing serious credibility to what could’ve been a vanity project.
What made the production even more intense was 50’s hands-on approach to the soundtrack.
He recorded the entire album during filming, setting up a mobile recording studio in a van right there on set.
That level of creative control and commitment showed he wasn’t just acting, he was processing his own narrative in real time. The film hit theaters in November 2005 and grossed $46.5 million worldwide against a $40 million budget, debuting at number one and proving his fanbase was locked in.
Over the years, Get Rich or Die Tryin’ has developed a cult following, especially for its soundtrack and the raw authenticity 50 brought to every scene. According to GQ, the experience shaped how he’d approach acting and production moving forward.
The film remains a standout moment in 50 Cent’s career, recognized as a classic among hip-hop cinema enthusiasts who appreciate its unflinching look at survival and ambition. Rolling Stone noted that the film’s endurance speaks to how 50 managed to balance street credibility with mainstream appeal.
The project proved that sometimes the most therapeutic art comes from the willingness to be vulnerable on camera.
