Special Ed Mentors Brooklyn Youth In Hip-Hop & STEAM With Hip-Hop Education Center

Special Ed mentors nine Brooklyn fellows in a new Hip-Hop and STEAM program merging MCing, beatmaking, and clean energy careers through Power the Future.

Special Ed is stepping into the mentor role for a new workforce development program that’s merging Hip-Hop culture with STEAM education in Brooklyn.

The Hip-Hop Education Center and National Grid are launching Power the Future, an 11-month fellowship that trains young adults in MCing, beatmaking, and filmmaking while building real skills in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math.

Nine fellows from across Brooklyn will start the program this month, each receiving a Power Up Backpack loaded with an iPad Pro, headphones, a microphone, and Wi-Fi access.

The curriculum goes beyond typical STEAM instruction.

Participants explore mathematics through rhythm and beatmaking, science through soundwaves and acoustics, technology through MIDI controllers and digital audio workstations, and engineering by building solar-powered USB chargers.

They’ll also study the physics and chemistry behind graffiti and aerosol design. Each fellow receives a two-year membership to Hip-Hop Communiversity, HHEC’s digital learning platform, where they can showcase their work and build professional networks.

Special Ed, the Flatbush native who went gold with his 1989 debut Youngest in Charge and its hit single “I Got It Made,” brings decades of mentorship experience to the MC pathway.

He’s been rooted in Brooklyn for years, running his own studio and developing the next generation of artists.

The partnership between HHEC and National Grid started in August 2025 with MC Lyte discussing how artistry engages young people.

Martha Diaz, President and CEO of HHEC, frames the initiative as investing in existing community brilliance.

“Hip-Hop has always been a laboratory for innovation, creativity, and problem-solving,” she said. “Through Power the Future, we’re connecting young people to the skills, mentors, and opportunities needed to shape tomorrow’s workforce.”

Dr. Robert Simmons III, Vice President of U.S. Social Impact and Community Engagement at National Grid, emphasizes the energy sector angle.

“Power the Future gives young people the tools, mentorship, and resources to lead as we reshape the energy landscape,” he explained.

The public launch happens August 18 at Brooklyn Public Library’s Central Library from 5:00 to 7:30 P.M., featuring a live Hip-Hop cypher and community celebration.

The event will showcase the fellows alongside industry mentors in Next Up conversations designed to build real professional connections.

Soul Science Lab will lead an interactive opening session to kick things off.

The Power the Future Fellowship runs through June 2027, with fellows receiving paid positions and ongoing mentorship from both National Grid professionals and established Hip-Hop artists.
