Rick Ross reveals why he and Kanye West chose Hawaii for recording, citing the island’s unique culture of anonymity and respect for privacy.
Rick Ross revealed why he and Kanye West chose Hawaii as their recording destination for “Devil in a New Dress.”
The Boss explained that the island’s unique culture of anonymity allowed them to work without constant interruptions from fans and other celebrities.
“Yeah, I was in Hawaii. I was with Kanye. We was at a studio in Hawaii. I understood why he went to Hawaii. Hawaiians.. if they do recognize you, they not going to speak,” Ross said during his appearance on Billboard Presents.
The privacy that Hawaii offered proved invaluable for the creative process. Unlike other recording destinations where celebrity presence draws attention, the island’s residents maintained a respectful distance from the high-profile artists working there.
This allowed Ross and West to focus entirely on their music without the distractions that typically come with recording in major music hubs.
“We would go to the McDonald’s right next to the g###### studio. It would be Rick Ross, every rapper you could imagine. Kanye everybody in the McDonald’s and nobody would speak to us,” Rick Ross said.
Ross was speaking during the opening night of his “Port of Miami” 20th anniversary tour, which kicked off in his hometown of Miami.
The legendary rapper reflected on the legacy of his debut album while discussing his current projects, including his upcoming album Set in Stone, which he’s been working on for approximately a year.
Beyond music, Ross has built an impressive business empire.
His ventures include ownership stakes in Wingstop and Checkers, as well as involvement with Rap Snacks.
