Mayor Mamdani Vows Investigation Into Jay-Z Concert Gate-Crashing Incident

Jay-Z performs after midnight following a security breach that delayed his Yankee Stadium show by over four hours when unticketed crowds stormed the venue.

Jay-Z took the stage at Yankee Stadium after midnight Monday morning following a security breach that forced the venue to lock down all entrances and delay his performance by more than four hours.

Hundreds of people without tickets stormed the gates Sunday night, overwhelming security and creating chaos that left thousands of legitimate ticketholders stuck outside in the heat while waiting for the situation to be contained.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani acknowledged the incident at a press conference Monday, saying the city would investigate what went wrong.

“Last night is something that we’re going to follow up on because I know many New Yorkers who were delayed after there was a breach of security by those that didn’t have tickets and that resulted in a multiple-hour delay for many others,” Mamdani said.

The mayor didn’t specify exactly who would be conducting the follow-up or what form it would take, but his comments signaled that the city was taking the security failure seriously.

The show was supposed to start at 8 p.m. Sunday but didn’t begin until 12:17 a.m. Monday.

When Jay-Z finally made it to the stage, he addressed the crowd directly about what happened.

“Somebody rushed the door,” he told the audience, explaining his decision to hold off on performing. “I didn’t want to start and have people get trampled on their way in. Really sorry for the inconvenience, but I had to make sure everybody was OK.”

According to NBC New York, the Yankees, Roc Nation, and Live Nation released a joint statement confirming that large groups of unticketed individuals “stormed over peaceful ticketholders” and “in some cases, breached security.”

The statement praised the NYPD and stadium security for their response, saying they worked with “thoughtful guidance” to reopen gates cautiously and carefully.

Mamdani also revealed a personal connection to the moment, sharing that Jay-Z’s 2001 album The Blueprint was the first CD he was ever given.

He mentioned seeing footage of Nas and Jay-Z performing together during the residency and reflected on how the clean version of the album introduced him to hip-hop culture.

Despite not attending any of the three Yankee Stadium shows himself, the mayor seemed genuinely invested in the outcome of the investigation.

The NYPD had no immediate information on arrests related to the breach, though video footage from outside the stadium showed large crowds gathered at entrances and people rushing through open doors before security could stop them.

Those who waited through the delay were rewarded with a 40-plus song setlist featuring guest appearances from Beyoncé, Rihanna, Clipse, Pharrell, Fat Joe, Jadakiss, and Jeezy.
