BBC Commentator Calls Pharrell

Pharell gets mistaken for A$AP Rocky when BBC commentator Guy Mowbray fumbles the call during the World Cup Final broadcast.

Pharrell sat courtside at the World Cup Final on Sunday night, minding his own business in a backward cap and shades, when BBC commentator Guy Mowbray decided to test his celebrity recognition skills and absolutely botched it.

The play-by-play man looked at the screen, saw the legendary producer in the stands at MetLife Stadium, and confidently announced he was looking at “AKA Rocky” before quickly correcting himself to “A$AP Rocky.”

Viewers immediately caught the double whiff, and the internet had a field day deciding which part was funnier.

The thing is, A$AP Rocky was actually sitting in a completely different suite with Rihanna, Future, and New York Knicks star Jalen Brunson.

So not only did Mowbray get the person wrong, but he also got the rapper wrong.

The moment occurred about 15 minutes into Spain’s 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina, and it became the kind of viral moment that overshadowed the actual game for many people online.

Mowbray’s mistake came during a broadcast packed with A-listers everywhere you looked.

President Trump, Tom Cruise, Mick Jagger, Kylie Jenner, Timothée Chalamet, and the entire Beckham family were all in attendance, so maybe the commentator’s celebrity-recognition circuit really was just overloaded.

Pharrell seemed completely unbothered by the whole thing, but the internet’s reaction to the mix-up showed that fans definitely weren’t letting it slide.

The real question is whether Mowbray will ever live this down, because this is the kind of moment that follows you forever in the age of social media and viral clips.
