John Legend takes on the role of Harry Belafonte in “The Road Home,” a biopic exploring Hugh Masekela’s anti-apartheid activism and musical legacy.
John Legend is stepping into one of the most important roles of his career, taking on the part of Harry Belafonte in Bill Condon’s upcoming biopic “The Road Home.”
The movie chronicles the life and struggle of South African jazz legend Hugh Masekela.
Legend’s casting marks a significant moment for the artist, who’s already proven his acting chops across multiple platforms from his Tony-winning performance in the Broadway production of “Jitney” to his role as Jesus in NBC’s “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert” and appearances in films like “La La Land” and “Coming 2 America.”
The film, currently in production in South Africa, explores Masekela’s defiance during the apartheid era and his complex relationship with the anti-apartheid movement, particularly around Paul Simon’s controversial Graceland album.

The narrative centers on Masekela’s decision to collaborate with Miriam Makeba on the Graceland band, a move that put him at odds with anti-apartheid advocates who viewed Simon’s album as a violation of the UN’s cultural boycott.
Belafonte, who befriended Masekela after the musician fled South Africa following the 1960 Sharpeville Massacre, becomes a crucial figure in this story as both mentor and supporter.
Legend expressed his deep respect for the role, stating he was “honored to know Mr. Belafonte as my friend, mentor and collaborator in the struggle for justice,” adding that Belafonte “was an incredible human being who lived a revolutionary life” and set a standard for artists and activists alike.
The ensemble cast includes South African actor Thabo Rametsi as Masekela, alongside Guy Pearce, Cynthia Erivo, and Johnny Flynn in key roles.
According to Deadline, the film features the music of Masekela, Makeba, and Simon, creating a soundtrack that honors the artists’ legacies while telling a story of defiance and resilience.
Legend’s involvement in this project reflects his own commitment to social justice causes throughout his career, positioning him as the ideal choice to embody Belafonte’s legacy of using art as a weapon for change.
