Salute Laz Alonso: All Those Legendary Hip-Hop Shirts On “The Boys”

A simple Instagram question led Laz Alonso to reveal the story behind one of the most beloved Hip-Hop tributes hidden inside The Boys.

The Boys just wrapped up its run, and people are still talking about the finale. Don’t worry, I’m not here to spoil anything. In fact, I haven’t even finished the final episodes myself. I need to sit down and watch everything.

What I can talk about is one of the coolest and most underrated elements of the show.

The Boys was one of the most interesting superhero series ever created. It flipped the entire genre on its head, mixed satire with action, and somehow managed to stay unpredictable year after year. But for Hip-Hop fans, there was another reason to tune in.

Mother’s Milk, played by actor Laz Alonso, is that reason. I still do not know how MM got that name, but that’s another question. If you know Laz, then you already know he’s part of the culture.

Throughout the show’s run, Laz rocked a Hip-Hop-themed T-shirts featuring legendary artists. Watching became a game in itself. I started looking forward to seeing which rapper or would appear on his shirt next.

The shirts became a subtle but powerful tribute to Hip-Hop culture. Laz called them “Easter Eggs,” a nod to Marvel. It was clear somebody behind the scenes – from Hip-Hop – understood exactly what they were doing.

As I watched all the hoopla surrounding the show’s ending, I decided to go straight to the source.

I jumped into Laz Alonso’s Instagram comments and asked him directly! To my surprise, he answered.

According to Laz, the idea was a collaborative effort between himself and the costume designer involved with the show. While he kept it humble, he confirmed that he played a direct role in making it happen. Love it!

Hip-Hop gets incorporated into television as an afterthought way too often. In this case, it felt authentic because it was authentic. Laz is authentic Somebody cared enough to make sure the culture was represented correctly. For six seasons, those shirts quietly became part of the show’s DNA.

It was a nod from one of our own.

Why Those Shirts Mattered

The significance of Laz Alonso’s wardrobe choices goes beyond fashion. Hip-Hop has influenced television, film, sports, and popular culture for decades, but its pioneers are not always recognized in mainstream spaces. By consistently wearing shirts celebrating artists and groups from Hip-Hop history, Alonso helped create visibility for legends who helped build the culture. It also sparked conversations among viewers who may not have been familiar with every artist featured. In many ways, those shirts served as a living archive of Hip-Hop history, reminding audiences that the culture’s influence reaches far beyond music. It was a small detail that ended up having a lasting impact.
