Vickie Paladino’s demanding federal investigations after NYC fifth-graders performed a dance to Glory that included pantomiming getting shot by police.
Vickie Paladino is calling for federal investigations after a New York City elementary school put fifth-graders on stage to perform a dance routine to John Legend and Common‘s track “Glory.”
The students danced to “Glory, a track that references the Ferguson riots following Michael Brown’s death at the hands of police officer Darren Wilson.
During the June 11 Multicultural Day event, the kids collapsed to the ground in unison while the song played lyrics about police violence and Ferguson.
Parents in the audience watched their children act out getting shot, and the reaction from city officials has been swift and bipartisan.
The Republican Queens Councilwoman is furious, saying the incident represents yet another example of political indoctrination in public schools.
Paladino’s demanding that both the Department of Education and the Department of Justice look into what’s happening inside NYC classrooms.
Democratic Councilman Phil Wong and Republican Councilman Frank Morano both called for the City Council Education Committee to investigate how political activism is infiltrating classrooms.
Wong stated that the messaging undermines respect for law enforcement, while Morano went further, saying the classroom should be a place for learning, not for using children as props to push a political agenda.
According to the NY Post, Morano emphasized that having 10- and 11-year-olds pretend to be shot by police is both offensive and irresponsible.
The performance sparked immediate calls for accountability and oversight of curriculum decisions in New York City schools.
The Department of Education and the Department of Justice have not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the federal investigation calls.
