Snoop Dogg’s biopic lands an August 2027 release from Universal, with Jonathan Daviss starring as the Long Beach rap legend.
Snoop Dogg is bringing his life story to the big screen this summer, and Universal Pictures just locked in the release date for what’s shaping up to be one of Hip-Hop’s most anticipated biopics.
The studio announced that “Snoop” will hit theaters on August 6, 2027, with Jonathan Daviss from Netflix’s “Outer Banks” stepping into the role of the Long Beach legend.
Craig Brewer, the director behind “Hustle and Flow” and “Song Sung Blue,” is helming the project, and the lineup of producers reads like a who’s who of Hip-Hop power players.
Snoop Dogg himself is producing alongside Brian Grazer from Imagine Entertainment and Sara Ramaker, president of Death Row Pictures.

This marks the first project under Death Row Pictures’ overall deal with NBCUniversal, which is significant, given Snoop’s complicated history with the label that launched his career.
Snoop’s rise began in 1993, when his debut album Doggystyle dropped on Death Row Records, with Dr. Dre as the sole producer.
The album became a cultural phenomenon, spawning massive hits like “What’s My Name?” and “Gin and Juice” that still define West Coast Hip-Hop.
He’s earned 17 Grammy nominations throughout his career and built a legacy that extends far beyond music into television, film, and business ventures.
But his journey wasn’t without turbulence. In 1993, while Doggystyle was climbing the charts, Snoop Dogg faced a murder charge that he was later acquitted of, and in 1996, a wrongful death lawsuit was settled out of court.
The irony of his current position isn’t lost on anyone paying attention.
In February 2022, Snoop purchased Death Row Records from MNRK Music Group, essentially becoming the owner of the very label that made him a star.
It’s a full-circle moment that speaks to his evolution from young artist to mogul, and it’s the foundation for this biopic deal with Universal.
At CinemaCon earlier this year, Snoop addressed the crowd directly about the project.
“After my brothers got to tell their story with ‘Straight Outta Compton,’ now it’s my turn,” he said, referencing N.W.A’s 2015 film that grossed over $200 million globally.
He also made it clear what audiences should expect.
“My movie is going to be rated R, I guarantee that. So get your parents’ permission,” Snoop told the crowd, signaling that the film won’t shy away from the harder edges of his story.
With Brewer’s track record of creating authentic, gritty character studies and Snoop’s direct involvement in the production, this biopic has all the ingredients to become a defining film about one of rap’s most enduring figures.
