Nivea’s Health Scare: The Grammy-Nominated Singer Is Fighting Leukemia

Nivea revealed she was diagnosed with leukemia and underwent treatment while leaning on faith, family and music during her private health battle.
Nivea came out this week with news that no fan wants to hear, revealing she was diagnosed with leukemia earlier this year and has been in the middle of treatment while largely staying out of public view.
The Atlanta-bred R&B singer made the announcement during a sit-down on the podcast “Cadillac Chronicles,” opening up about the battle in a way that felt more like a testimony than a breakdown.
She told the hosts that the diagnosis completely flipped her perspective, pushing her to stop sweating the small stuff and start genuinely appreciating the people and moments right in front of her.
And credit where it’s due, she didn’t spend the conversation feeling sorry for herself. Nivea said she’s leaning on her faith, and that God has been the throughline keeping her steady while she fights through treatment.

She’s now getting back to what she loves most and working on music again.
Leukemia is a cancer that takes root in the bone marrow, where the body produces blood cells, and it doesn’t play by the same rules as most other cancers.
Instead of forming a tumor you can locate on a scan, it floods the system with abnormal white blood cells that crowd out the healthy red blood cells and platelets the body actually needs to function.
Depending on the type, it can move fast or slow, but either way the symptoms tend to hit hard, including extreme fatigue, unexplained bruising and bleeding, recurring infections, and bone pain.
Treatment usually involves chemotherapy, and in more serious cases, targeted therapies or stem cell transplants.
For those who were around in the early 2000s, Nivea was one of the voices that defined that era of R&B, especially in the lane that connected closely to hip-hop.
She burst onto the scene when she hopped on Mystikal’s “Danger (Been So Long)” in 2000, and that one appearance was all it took for Jive Records to come knocking.
Her debut album dropped in 2002 and generated her biggest hit, “Don’t Mess with My Man,” a collaboration with Jagged Edge’s Brian and Brandon Casey that peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100.
That record earned her a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals at the 2003 ceremony, and it’s still the kind of track that stops people cold when it comes on.
She continued releasing music through the mid-2000s, including the 2021 AllHipHop piece after she opened up publicly about the hardships she’d survived, and she’s been working on a creative return in recent years.
The Cadillac Chronicles appearance marks the most candid Nivea has been about this chapter of her life, and she made clear that her faith and her family are what’s been carrying her through.
