Herbie Hancock weighs in on AI’s role in music, balancing innovation with the dangers of artificial intelligence reshaping Hip-Hop culture.
Herbie Hancock at 86 is still asking the hard questions about technology and where music’s headed in an AI-saturated world.
The jazz legend who helped birth Hip-Hop through his 1983 collaboration with DJ Grand Mixer D.ST on “Rockit” has spent decades bridging genres and working with rappers like Snoop Dogg and Common, so his perspective on artificial intelligence carries real weight in conversations about the culture’s future.
According to the South China Morning Post, Hancock sees this not as a threat but as an evolution worth studying carefully.
“I’m an old techie, you know, so I’m actually looking forward to AI’s development. Maybe someday I could play a duet with myself, or a duet with AI,” Hancock said.

The split in Hip-Hop over AI is stark and telling. While producers like Timbaland have fully embraced the technology, launching Stage Zero Entertainment to create AI-generated artists, others, like T-Pain, are actively rejecting AI in their creative process.
That tension between innovation and preservation defines the moment we’re living in right now.
“I don’t worry about AI replacing musicians because AI doesn’t have feelings, not like we do. I don’t know whether it will have a realization of itself at some point. But the thing is, it has not lived a life,” Hancock reasoned.
The reality is that AI-generated music isn’t disappearing. The music industry just rolled out new labeling standards to help listeners understand what they’re hearing.
In July 2026, the RIAA, the Grammys, and SAG-AFTRA introduced AI-Generated and AI-Assisted labels with visual icons and metadata support, providing fans with transparency into how AI was used in sound recordings.
The money tells its own story. Studies show the AI-generated music market will reach billions by 2030 and beyond, with some forecasts projecting the sector could hit $7.89 billion by 2035.
That kind of growth means the conversation isn’t about whether AI stays in music; it’s about how the culture adapts to its presence.
