There’s A New Black Panther For Marvel’s New Era

David Jonsson is officially entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe as T’Challa’s son, launching the next chapter of the Black Panther legacy under Ryan Coogler.

The Black Panther is back.

David Jonsson is stepping into the Marvel spotlight as the next generation of Wakanda after Marvel Studios officially announced he will portray T’Challa’s son in Black Panther 3.

The highly anticipated sequel is set to arrive in theaters on Dec. 15, 2028.

The reveal came during San Diego Comic-Con, where director Ryan Coogler confirmed his return to helm the third installment alongside Letitia Wright, who will once again portray Shuri. The new film will center on T’Challa’s son as he comes of age, marking a major shift for one of Marvel’s most celebrated franchises.

The death of Chadwick Boseman was the end of the original King T’Challa, the star of 2018’s Black Panther. Boseman died from colon cancer in 2020 at age 43. Coogler was forced into reshaping the future of the franchise without recasting the beloved actor.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever saw Wright’s Shuri inherit the Black Panther mantle, allowing the story to honor Boseman’s legacy. T’Challa’s son creates a bridge between the franchise’s past and its future.

Few superhero franchises have matched the cultural and commercial impact of Black Panther.

The original film generated $1.3 billion worldwide and earned seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. It was the first superhero movie ever recognized in that category. It ultimately won Oscars for Best Costume Design, Best Production Design and Best Original Score.

The sequel also proved to be a major success. Released in 2022, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever earned $859 million globally and posted one of the strongest opening weekends of the post-pandemic era with $331 million worldwide.

The film also collected five Oscar nominations, including Angela Bassett’s historic Best Supporting Actress nomination, the first acting nomination ever received by a performer in a Marvel Studios film.

Letitia Wright will wear the Black Panther suit again in Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled to arrive in theaters on Dec. 18.
