Kurupt says he brought Nate Dogg to the “Area Codes” session and didn’t know he’d been cut until he heard the song on radio.
Kurupt reveals he was supposed to be on Ludacris’ 2001 classic “Area Codes” and got cut without warning.
The West Coast legend told Power 106’s Brown Bag Mornings he was the one who brought Nate Dogg to that studio session.
He walked in expecting all three of them to end up on the track together.
Nate Dogg walked out of that studio with one of the most iconic hooks in rap history, and Kurupt’s verse never made the cut.

He didn’t find out until six months later when he heard the finished song playing on the radio, no verse, no credit.
Kurupt’s brother Roscoe also had verses recorded that day, and neither one of them survived the final lineup.
According to Power 106’s Brown Bag Mornings, Kurupt told the story straight, no drama, like a man who’s genuinely made peace with it.
He made the introduction, kicked off one of early 2000s rap’s most celebrated collabs, and walked out without a verse on the record.
That’s the kind of story that reminds you how differently music history could’ve gone with one different decision in the studio.
“Area Codes” dropped in the summer of 2001 on the Rush Hour 2 soundtrack before landing on Word of Mouf later that year.
The Jazze Pha-produced single peaked at No. 24 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration at the 2002 ceremony. Billboard has documented how “Area Codes” became one of Ludacris’ most enduring records from that era.
Kurupt’s been one of the West Coast’s most respected MCs since the Death Row era.
AllHipHop confirmed he returned home after a health scare that shook the community earlier this year, and it’s genuinely good to hear him out here talking again.
Two decades on, he’s telling it straight with zero bitterness attached.
Nate Dogg’s hook on “Area Codes” still hits the same way it did in 2001 every single time. Knowing Kurupt and Roscoe had verses recorded in that session makes you wonder what the alternate version of this classic actually sounded like.
At the 2002 Grammys, “Area Codes” lost Best Rap/Sung Collaboration to Eve and Gwen Stefani’s “Let Me Blow Ya Mind.”
