Nas joins Snoop Dogg, Lil Wayne, and James Brown as the latest recipient of BMI’s Icon Award at the August 26 ceremony in LA.
Nas is set to receive the BMI Icon Award at the 2026 BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards on August 26 in Los Angeles.
BMI announced the honor today, recognizing Nas as one of rap’s greatest storytellers and a cultural force impossible to measure.
The private ceremony in LA will also honor the songwriters, producers, and publishers behind the year’s 35 most-performed R&B/Hip-Hop songs from BMI’s catalog.
BMI VP Catherine Brewton called Nas “a true icon whose legacy continues to inspire artists, influence culture and shape the sound of Hip-Hop for generations.”

In being named a BMI Icon, Nas joins an elite group that includes James Brown, Snoop Dogg, Lil Wayne, Busta Rhymes, and Babyface. The event will be hosted by BMI CEO Mike O’Neill, alongside executives Mike Steinberg and Catherine Brewton, and press credentials are limited due to capacity constraints.
Nas earned this recognition starting with Illmatic in 1994, a debut that immediately reset the bar for what East Coast rap could be. He’s put out 17 studio albums, moved more than 35 million records globally, and took home his first GRAMMY in 2021 for King’s Disease.
In 2021, the Library of Congress also inducted Illmatic into its National Recording Registry, recognizing the album as a cultural, historical, and artistic landmark.
The business side of Nas is just as formidable, with QueensBridge Venture Partners making early investments in Coinbase, Lyft, Dropbox, Ring, Robinhood, and Pluto TV.
He also co-owns Mass Appeal, the record label and media company that’s become a leading force for Hip-Hop culture globally. AllHipHop tracked Nas’ expanding footprint this year, from narrating the NBA Finals to headlining the World Cup 26 Queens concert in June.
Earlier this month, Nas joined Jay-Z at Yankee Stadium to celebrate the Reasonable Doubt 30th anniversary.
He’s also planning a Broadway adaptation of the 1984 Hip-Hop film Beat Street and pledged $2 million toward the Hip Hop Museum in the Bronx. The BMI Icon Award is BMI’s highest honor, adding to a 2026 run that’s already put Nas at the biggest stages in the game.
