Obama’s 2026 Summer Playlist Proves He’s Still Tracking Hip-Hop Closer Than Most

Obama’s new summer playlist has Vince Staples, Doechii, BossMan Dlow and Drake all landing in the Hip-Hop section.

Barack Obama released his 2026 summer playlist Thursday and proved that his Hip-Hop ear gets sharper with every passing season.

The former president posted more than 40 tracks on Instagram, briefly honoring Glen Hansard before getting to a rap section with real credibility.

Vince Staples earned his spot with “White Flag,” a politically direct single from Cry Baby, his 2026 album that arrived June 5 on Loma Vista Records.

The video for “White Flag” shows Staples coating an American flag white before shooting it, and that level of political weight is exactly what draws Obama to current Hip-Hop.

Doechii and SZA’s collaborative track “girl, get up” also made the playlist, a December 2025 release that addressed misogyny and online backlash in the industry.

BossMan Dlow and A Tribe Called Quest’s classic “Award Tour” also appeared on the list, giving Obama’s playlist a range from current trap to foundational ’90s Hip-Hop.

Drake also made the cut, continuing a pattern where Obama includes the Toronto rapper regardless of whatever controversy is swirling around him in the industry.

Obama split the list evenly between contemporary releases and well-known classics, which is exactly the approach he’s taken in past years.

Obama dedicated the playlist’s opening to Glen Hansard, who died Wednesday at 56 in a motorcycle accident. Obama wrote on Instagram, “Our hearts go out to his family,” tying the opening of the playlist to Hansard’s 2012 song “Song of Good Hope.”

Obama has been sharing summer playlists since 2015, and the Hip-Hop picks have consistently been the most debated part of each year’s list.

AllHipHop covered his 2025 year-end picks, which placed Kendrick Lamar and Drake together despite their very public feud.

Past playlists have featured Nas, Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, GloRilla, Ice Spice and Migos, covering both legendary names and newer acts at the exact right moments in their careers.

He claimed in a past interview that he curates these lists personally, pushing back on skeptics who assumed a staffer was responsible for his taste.

Obama published his annual reading list containing 11 books the day before the playlist landed on Instagram, giving fans two separate lists to unpack this week.
