A Non-Spoiler Review: The Odyssey
👍 👍 👍 👍 👍
The Odyssey is the latest film from Academy Award-winning director Christopher Nolan and features an ensemble cast that includes Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Jon Bernthal, Charlize Theron, John Leguizamo and more.
Based on the ancient Greek epic of the same name, The Odyssey follows the extraordinary journey of Odysseus (Matt Damon) as he struggles to find his way home after the Trojan War. What begins as a voyage across the sea becomes an arduous, decade-long test of perseverance, resilience, strength and determination. While his family fights to protect their home and kingdom in his absence, Odysseus is forced to confront mythical creatures, malevolent forces and seemingly insurmountable obstacles in a desperate effort to reunite with the people he loves.
For full transparency, I’ve never read the original poem. That means I can’t speak to how faithfully Nolan adapts the source material or compare every story beat to Homer’s epic. What I can say is that The Odyssey is an exceptionally crafted film that once again showcases Christopher Nolan’s immense talent and the remarkable team surrounding him. This sweeping historical fantasy delivers breathtaking scale, epic action and moments that border on horror, all while never losing sight of the emotional core driving its story.
One of the film’s greatest strengths is its ability to balance massive spectacle with intimate storytelling. The action sequences are gripping, meticulously staged and consistently carry emotional weight. Rather than existing simply to impress visually, each set piece pushes the story and its characters forward. The Odyssey draws viewers in through extraordinary craftsmanship, layered character work, stunning visuals and outstanding performances. Employing his signature nonlinear storytelling, Nolan expertly weaves together a mythical journey filled with wonder, tension, danger and anticipation as Odysseus faces one impossible challenge after another.
Once again, Christopher Nolan reminds audiences why he is regarded as one of the defining filmmakers of his generation. Throughout the film’s nearly three-hour runtime, he demonstrates his continued commitment to practical filmmaking, immersive spectacle and emotionally resonant storytelling. Instead of leaning heavily on computer-generated imagery, Nolan once again favors practical effects whenever possible, giving The Odyssey a remarkable sense of realism and physicality. Even while fully embracing the story’s fantastical mythology, he creates a world that feels both mythical and surprisingly tangible.
Perhaps the film’s most impressive technical achievement is Nolan’s decision to shoot The Odyssey entirely with IMAX cameras. Rather than reserving the format for select moments, every frame is presented with extraordinary scale, clarity and immersion. Complementing Nolan’s vision is the stunning cinematography of Hoyte van Hoytema. In his fifth collaboration with Nolan, van Hoytema captures breathtaking landscapes, massive battle sequences and quieter character moments with remarkable precision, creating imagery that feels both intimate and monumental.
The film’s impressive ensemble rises to meet Nolan’s ambitious vision. Matt Damon leads as the courageous and battle-weary Odysseus, alongside Anne Hathaway as his steadfast wife Penelope, Tom Holland as their determined son Telemachus and Robert Pattinson as the calculating Antinous. The supporting cast includes Zendaya as Athena, Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy, John Leguizamo as Eumaeus, Jon Bernthal as Menelaus, Charlize Theron as Calypso and several other standout performers.
While the entire cast leaves a lasting impression, Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway deliver the film’s strongest performances. Damon, in particular, gives one of the finest performances of his career, bringing charisma, intensity and genuine vulnerability to a warrior haunted by the emotional scars of war and the weight of his past.
Overall, The Odyssey is another remarkable achievement from Christopher Nolan and further cements his reputation as one of cinema’s most ambitious storytellers. While the film offers the breathtaking spectacle, technical mastery and visual grandeur audiences have come to expect from Nolan, its greatest strength lies in its humanity. Beneath the mythology, terrifying creatures, epic battles and stunning visuals is a deeply personal story about resilience, regret, perseverance and the enduring power of family.
Combined with Hoyte van Hoytema’s breathtaking cinematography, immersive sound design and Ludwig Göransson’s powerful score, The Odyssey is a film that deserves to be experienced in a theater.
I was fortunate enough to see the film in IMAX during an advance screening, and I highly recommend seeing it in a premium format—whether that’s IMAX, 70mm or Dolby Cinema—if you have the opportunity. Regardless of how you see it, The Odyssey serves as a reminder that some films possess the rare ability to transport audiences to another world and leave a lasting impression long after the credits roll.
